After several months of persistent emailing and working with connections behind the scenes, we were surprised to learn on Saturday that the law we had pushed for, for such a long time would finally become law. Granted, it is not everything we have asked for (for example, it only abolishes listing age with regard to employment but age is still listed on official government documents) it is still a major step in the right direction. This law is certainly a victory for transchrono people everywhere, though especially in California.
Governor Jerry Brown of California, a friend of the transchrono community signed into law AB-1687, which you can read in full here, which forbids public information outlets, employers and other agents from publicizing someone’s “age” (in the traditional sense). This, for example, makes it illegal for recruitment agencies, job sites and public listings like IMDB to reveal a person’s “age” if asked not to by the individual. This will make life easier for transchrono who often feel alienated when they are forced to list an age for themselves that they do not identify with.
We look forward to more progress being made as we go forward. Thank you Ian Calderon and Governor Jerry Brown.
